Nijō Castle Grounds

This is the fiirst of what I hope will be several paintings inspired by my recent trip to Japan. This one comes from a visit to Nijō Castle in Kyoto, taking in one of the beautifully maintained trees on the grounds and the inner moat and wall around Honmaru Palace. The work is most certainly inspired by the gorgeous Kanō paintings found throughout the Ninomaru Palace. The dimension of the work are 48” wide by 60” tall on unstretched canvas. For sale here.

While painting this one I was working my way through the complete stories of Sherlock Holmes on audiobook (read by Stephen Fry, perfect) which I have been doing as a palette cleanser between other books. Still quite a ways to go, but I caught many short stories while painting this one including The Adventure of Speckled Band, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, The Man with the Twisted Lip, The Adventure of the Engineer’s Thumb and The Five Orange Pips.
